CHRAJ says adherence to human rights not encouraging

Ho, Nov. 6, GNA- Mr. Joseph Nuertey, the Volta Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), on Tuesday observed that adherence to human rights issues in the country remained poor.

He noted that parents continued to deny their children basic needs while the practice of outmoded customs and administrative injustices had become the order of the day.

Mr. Nuertey said this at a quiz competition organized by the Commission for selected senior high schools in the Volta Region, as part of activities marking this year’s International Human Rights Day scheduled for December 10.

The schools included Keta Senior High School, Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School, Abutia Senior High School, Adidome Senior High School and Dzolo Senior High School. Mr. Nuertey said many people remained ignorant about human rights issues and that the situation was not good for a democratic country like Ghana.

He urged students to study the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and familiarize themselves with human rights issues to enable them to educate the public on the issues. Mr. Nuertey said “be catalyst of change to transform the general view and perceptions of society on human rights,” saying the violation of the rights of an individual was a negation of the general welfare of society.”

Keta Senior High School emerged winners of the quiz competition with 62 points, followed by Dzolo Senior High School, with 45 points, Hohoe Evangelical Presbyterian Senior High School, with 42 points, Abutia Senior High School and Adidome Senior High School. 06-11-07
