CHRAJ Director condemns indiscipline among students

Nkoranza (B/A), April 17, GNA – The Nkoranza District Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Mr Patrick Yeboah-Asuamah has condemned acts of indiscipline among some students, leading to strikes and the destruction of school property. The CHRAJ Director was addressing staff and students of the Nkoranza Secondary Technical School at a seminar to educate them on the “Rights and Responsibilities of the Student Under the 1992 Constitution.”

Mr Yeboah-Asuamah explained that as much as students had the right to life and survival as well as physical, moral and intellectual development and also enjoyed protection from harmful influence, they were also obliged to be law abiding and to respect authority. “Students should eschew tribalism, nepotism and to respect the rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of others, while refraining from engaging themselves in any acts detrimental to the welfare of others.”

Mr Yeboah-Asuamah asked them to avoid examination malpractices and escaping from school to town without permission. The CHRAJ Director stressed the need for students and the youth to co-operate with the law enforcement agencies in the maintenance of law and order.

The youth should be friendly to the environment and guard it against bushfires, illegal timber logging, pollution, and illegal “galamsey” mining operations.

Mr. Yeboah-Asuamah deplored the attitudes of some parents who neglected their responsibilities towards their children, saying, such attitude had great effect on the development of children. He attributed social problems such as child labour, people living on the streets, drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, child trafficking, defilement and rape to child neglect by parents and appealed to those with such attitude to stop. Mr. Joseph Kwaku Adjei, Headmaster of the School, commended CHRAJ for organising the seminar to ensure that students knew on their rights and responsibilities.
