Cholera alert: Upper West Akyem engulfed in filth

The Environmental Health Director at Upper West Akyem District, Mr. Godwin Amevor has confirmed that it will not be surprising for people living at Adeiso to be affected by cholera and malaria since the area is now engulfed in filth.

According to him, the sanitation situation in the area is extremely deplorable.

The area has been turned into a rubbish dump. A mountain of rubbish stretches from the major streets in the area.

A foul smell fills the air, making passers-by hold their noses. Some people openly defecate in the open space while food vendors ply their trade a few meters away.

Mr. Amevor bemoaned the negative attitude of residents who he claimed have abandoned the National Sanitation Exercise; as they throw rubbish anyhow in the community.

The garbage containers in the area are damaged while the only one is not removed on regular basis.

“The non-removal of the garbage bin was the genesis of the rubbish dump, which attract all manner of people to dispose of their refuse in the area,” Prince Bening reported.

He added, the Environmental Officer decried the lack of resources to help them manage the situation holistically.

As today marked the monthly nationwide clean-up campaign, residents failed to participate in the exercise.

In a related development, residents in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly congratulated residents in the area for coming out in their numbers to participate in the exercise.

Personnel from the Fire Service, Zoom lion, the Police Service and staff from the Assembly were part of the exercise.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) for KMA, after the exercise charged traders to take active part in the exercise as they have not shown keen interest in the exercise since it started.

According to him, the traders generate more waste than any other person in the area hence the need for them to take active part in it.
