Accra, Oct. 10, GNA – French President Jacques Chirac has praised Ghana’s policies of economic development and the building of the state of law. He noted that these policies had received appreciation in the framework of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Peer Review Mechanism and lauded the role Ghana played towards peace and stability in West Africa.
A statement issued by the French Embassy in Ghana said President Chirac made the statement when President John Agyekum Kufuor visited Paris to take part in UNESCO General conference and 60th anniversary. The statement said the two Presidents agreed to intensify political dialogue between them and to develop visits between the two countries where several cooperation and development projects were mentioned. Their discussion also focused on the situation in West Africa, particularly in Cote d’Ivoire and they shared the same view regarding necessary efforts to be made in order to implement the national reconciliation process, which depended on indisputable and transparent elections.
President Chirac pledged France’s continuous support for member states of the African Union and Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS), saying: “France is favourable to an increasing role of the United Nations in accordance with the African Union’s will.”
