Chinese Chamber donates to community library

The Ghana Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies have donated 96 conference chairs to the Kwabenya-Abokobi School and Community Library in the Ga East Municipality.

The package is to enhance learning and improve on the ability of the community and students to make good use of the library in research activities.

Mr Zhou Youbin, a Counselor, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to Ghana, said the donation was part of their commitment to improve education in the country through sound and better study environment.

Mr Zhou said the strategies of reinvigorating the country through Science, Education and development of human resources had played a significant role in China’s success story, stressing that, with support and hard work, talented Ghanaians could enjoy better lives and prosperous future.

He urged community leaders to make good use of the furniture and keep it in good state for the library to be more comfortable to attract better patronage.

Mr Zhou inaugurated the Chinese Language Centre for students in the Kwabenya-Abokobi Community to promote Chinese culture and help Ghanaian students to get opportunities to study in China.

“Languages are the bridge to other culture and so learning Chinese could open new opportunities to students to catch a wonderful and real China, which could help students understand China and learn their success stories,” he explained.

He said China was committed to assisting Ghana to build its own capacity in the field of education, health, and socio-economic development.

Mr Stephen Shum, Vice President of Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, said China was now Ghana’s largest single trading partner and one of the biggest sources of both development assistance and commercial financing to Ghana.

He said education was key to a country’s development; hence the need for the Chinese Community in Ghana to promote support for the training of Ghanaians in all fields of endeavour, as a major area of intervention in development assistance.

He said the gesture would further cement the close and mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.

Mr Kwao Sackey, Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga East Assembly, commended the Chinese Community in Ghana for their support and assured them that the chairs would be put to good use to improve the use of ICT for national discourse.

He said the Assembly has since 2008 benefited from the Korea Government’s concept of making reading and learning a fun for school pupils through its ‘Thank You Small Library’ initiative with the provision of library books spearheaded by Mrs Annan and Ambassador Dho.
