Chinese Ambassador makes donation to Ministry Of Employment

Accra, July 27, GNA – Mr Gong Jianzhong, the Chinese Ambassador in Ghana, on Wednesday handed over a cheque for GH¢23,122.07 to the Ministry of Employment and Social Welfare to support the Department of Social Welfare and the National Council for Persons with Disability in Accra.

The donation is proceeds from a charity cultural performance dubbed “My Dream Charity Show”, which was staged at the National Theatre in April by a team of Chinese Disabled Cultural Troupe to raise funds to support the activities of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled.

Mr Jianzong stated that challenges faced by the physically challenged propelled the Chinese Embassy to organise the Charity Show to support the physically challenged.

He said the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe showcased splendour of the art forms of the profoundness of Chinese culture.

Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, who received the donation on behalf of the Ministry, expressed his gratitude for the gesture describing it as significant.

He noted that social protection was vital in everybody’s life, hence the need to offer more support to the physically challenged.

Mr Mensah appealed to the Embassy to assist the School of Social Welfare with computers and other equipment to enhance their training.

Mr Alexander Asum-Ahensah, Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture, said the positive impact of the performances that generated the income for the donation would greatly encourage and instil in the physically challenged the “Can Do” spirit.

He thanked the Chinese government and expressed the hope that the cordial relations that existed between the two countries would grow from strength to strength.

Mr Stephen Adongo, Acting Director of Department of Social Welfare, said the money would be used to fund to roll out programmes to support the physically challenged.

He said training programmes would also be held for the disabled to bring out their potentials so that they could also become self-employed.
