Accra, March 19, GNA – China on Friday donated 221 cartons of fireworks valued at 100 million cedis to Ghana to be used for her National Day celebrations and other activities.
The fireworks included Roman Candles, crackers and quick match. Mr Zhang Keyuan, Chinese Ambassador in Ghana, who presented the items to the Minister of Information, Nana Akomea in Accra said the “fireworks were not to be used for war, but to celebrate political stability, economic development and peace in Ghana”.
He said the friendship and co-operation between China and Ghana dated back to 1964 and that his country deemed Ghana as a “good old friend”.
“…And so we are here to show our appreciation to our co-operation with the Ghanaian Government”
The Ambassador explained that China invented gunpowder some thousand years ago and her fireworks were for celebrations of achievements and not for destruction.
Nana Akomea commended China for her continued assistance to Ghana in the various sectors of national development saying: “We also see such assistance as from a brother to a brother.”
He said the fireworks would be stored at the ammunition base of the Military Camp for proper storage to be used during Ghana’s 12 years of constitutional rule and President John Agyekum Kufuor’s re-election for a second term in January 2005.
