Children appeal for free access to toilet facilities

Bawku (U/E), May 01, GNA – Children in Bawku have appealed to the municipal assembly to allocate one apartment each for their use at all public toilets to prevent them from defecating indiscriminately. They said their parents could not afford to pay the 500 cedis fee charged and therefore ease themselves at any convenient place to inconvenient the public.

They made the appeal to the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Boniface Gambilla, and Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Abdul-Rahman Gumah, when they interacted with people during a clean-up exercise at Bawku.

The children, who participated actively alongside their parents, further called for the re-demarcation of refuse collection sites to be used for recreational parks in order to prevent the creation of dump sites in the midst of houses.

Mr Gumah gave the assurance that the assembly would consider their plea and urged them to sustain their communal spirit to rid the municipality of filth.

He deplored the apathetic attitude of some shop owners who failed to clean up their shops and some drivers.

Eight recalcitrant drivers were arrested for flouting the order not to operate during the exercise.

He thanked the security services, heads of departments and all those who took part in the exercise and expressed the hope that such massive turn-up at the monthly clean-up campaigns could remove filth and sickness.
