Chiefs urged to fend for themselves – Mpiani

Accra, Nov. 29, GNA – Mr Kwadwo Mpiani, Chief of Staff and Minister of Presidential Affairs on Tuesday asked chiefs to wean themselves off government’s payroll in order to be truly independent.

He said it is a fact that when somebody pays for your upkeep he would “consciously or unconsciously try to manipulate you.” Mr Mpiani was moving for the approval of the sum of 928,896 million cedis for the services of government machinery for the 2006 fiscal year. He asked Members of Parliament and well-meaning Ghanaians to debate and strategise on ways of funding the chieftaincy institution from non-governmental sources.

The government machinery is made up of Regional Co-ordinating Councils (RCCs), Office of the President, Presidential Committee on Chieftaincy, National Governance Programme amongst others.

Earlier, the House approved the sum of 530,527 million cedis for the services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a sum of 43,166 million cedis for the services of the Ministry of Harbours and Railways.
