Accra (GAR), – Nana Akuoko Sarpong, Presidential Staffer in charge of chieftaincy affairs, today said under the net local government reforms, government has accepted in principle that 30 per cent of nominees for district assemblies should be reserved for the traditional authorities. Addressing the National Workshop on Governance in Ghana, he said this will ensure the involvement of chiefs in the assemblies and give them consultative powers. “If the current efforts at democratization is to succeed, then there is need to link up contemporary state apparatus with traditional authorities.” Nana Akuoko Sarpong suggested that the title of District Chief Executive should be changed to Mayor who will be elected by the community. “This will enable chiefs and assemblymen to work together to provide local think-tank and resources for the development of their areas”.
