Kumasi, June 5, GNA – Members of the National House of Chiefs on Thursday resolved to avoid participating actively in party politics as the nation moves towards election in December. The chiefs said at their meeting in Kumasi that their decision was to protect the reputation of chieftaincy and reduce some of the problems created for their communities as a result of involvement in active partisan politics.
The House also called for the passage of the chieftaincy bill which is still awaiting its final reading in Parliament. The President of the House, Odeneho Gyapong Ababio II, stressed the important role played by chiefs in the society and called for proper recognition and provision of logistics to enhance their work. He expressed concern about the inability of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to pay the allowances of chiefs this year and said steps were being taken to ensure that chiefs received their allowances and other logistics to enhance their work. The House also dismissed the application of Nana Kwaku Atta as King of Nzema land. 05 June 08
