Chiefs appeal for road contract to be terminated

Suhum, May 23, GNA – The chief and people of Coaltar in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District of the Eastern Region have called on the government to immediately terminate the contract awarded to S. D. Owusu Contract Works for the construction of the main road. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency Mr Samuel Owusu, Chairman of the Coaltar Area Council and also spokesman for the chiefs in the area, said for the timely intervention by some members of the community, the contractor and some of his workers would have been attacked by some angry youth of the area.

Mr Owusu said contract for the construction of the road was awarded to S. D. Owusu Contract Works of Suhum and for the past seven years no work had been done on the road. He said the company has no equipment and anytime a government official visited the area, the contractor would hire a grader and pretended to start work but after the government official had left he would withdraw the equipment.

He said at the moment no vehicle plied the Coaltar/Kofi/Pare/Dokrochiwa/Owuram road because constant rainfall had made the road non-motorable. 23 May 07
