Kumasi, July 9, GNA – Nana Gyamfua Afriyie II, Queen Mother of Apirade, near Kumasi, has described as erroneous the impression that chiefs and queen mothers were idol worshippers.
She contended that the fact that chiefs and queen mothers pour libation on festive occasions as part of their traditional duties did not make them idol worshippers. On the contrary, Nana Afriyie said most of the present crop of chiefs and queen mothers were Christians, who adhere to Christian principles.
She was speaking during a call on her on Sunday by the Very Reverend Father Philip Opoku Nyame, parish priest of the Amakom Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, the executive of the church and some residents of Apirade to announce the intention of the church to establish a church in the town.
Nana Afriyie commended the church for its developmental roles in the various communities in the country, particularly in areas of education, health and human resource training in employable skills. The Very Rev Nyame expressed his appreciation to the queen mother for accepting the proposal of the church and hoped the establishment of the church would help shape the behaviour of the youth, especially those who engage in anti-social activities.
