Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood has rejected a request to have the examination of businessman Alfred Agbesi Woyome by former Attorney General Martin Amidu telecast live.
The request was made by a citizen, Richard Asante Yeboah, after the country’s highest court, the Supreme Court, granted Mr Amidu the permission to examine the beleaguered businessman.
The judgement debt case, which has spanned over five years, has seen Mr Woyome return GH¢4 million out of GH¢51.2 million.
The Minister of Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, had recently written to the Court to discontinue the case, triggering an Amidu application to examine Mr Woyome, a known member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Asante Yeboah, who is also a known member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), wrote for the examination, originally fixed for November 24, to be telecast live with precedent from the Election Petition of 2013.
But the Chief Justice, in a letter written on her behalf by Judicial Secretary Justice Alex Poku-Acheampong, said what is being requested “is not the normal practice by the Judiciary”.
The examination has since been pending after Mr Woyome filed an application of stay of proceeding, which has subsequently been challenged by Mr Amidu. The Court has fixed December 1 to rule on Mr Woyome’s application.
