Chief asks educational authorities to sanction non-performing teachers

Apam C/R Sept. 24 GNA — Nana Edu Effrim X, Chief of Apam in the Central Region, has asked Ghana Education Service to withdraw its recognition for teachers whose schools gained zero per cent in the 2010 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Nana Effrim made the suggestion at the Best Teacher Awards celebration at Apam on Friday, during which 55 teachers and non-teachers in the Gomoa West District were awarded.

None of the candidates from 80 schools in the Region with nine from the District obtained between aggregates six and 30 in the BECE in 2010 to qualify for Senior High School (SHS).

Nana Effrim said head teachers of the schools that had zero per cent should “bow down their heads in shame”, and should work hard to uplift the low image of education in the area.

He expressed regret that public schools have the best qualified teachers, yet they perform poorly in the BECE.

The Chief appealed to the heads of SHS to comply with the government directives on the enrolment of 30 per cent local applicants in their schools.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Theophilous Aidoo Mensah promised to help improve on teaching and learning in the area by improving upon educational infrastructure.

This, he said, includes the construction of a three-storey complex District Education office.

Prizes ranging from television sets, refrigerators, computer laptops, gas cookers and certificates of merits were awarded.

The District Assembly contributed GH?20,000 towards the celebration.
