Chief appeals for support to end child labour

Winneba (C/R), Aug 16, GNA- Nana Obirifo Kojo Tetteh III, Chief of Sankor, a suburb of Winneba in the Central Region, has appealed to the government to give financial support to the poor to enable them to go into business.

He said parents would not give their children out to be engaged in worse forms of child labour in some parts of the country if they were earning some revenue from their businesses.

The chief made the appeal during the inauguration of a six-member Child Labour Prevention Youth club at Sankor near Winneba. The formation of such clubs was to serve as advocacy tools to end child labour and all forms of child abuses in the various communities. The Centre for Rural Enterprise Development (CRED), a local NGO, is sponsoring the Programme, which is being carried out in some selected communities in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya district. The district has a very high child labour rate to the disadvantage of their education.

Nana Tetteh said due to of high poverty rate in the area, most parents are unable to cater properly for their children making them vulnerable for people to engage their wards in any work. Mr. Emmanuel Sodja Martey, District Co-ordinator of the National Youth council who inaugurated the club, urged members to operate in collaboration with their various chiefs and assembly members. The Club has Mr. Ernest David Annan as Chairman with Madam Janet Prempeh as his vice and Mr. Isaac Annan, secretary.
