Chelsea are poised to sign former Liverpool and England captain Jordan Henderson on a free transfer after agreeing a two-year contract with the veteran midfielder.
The 36-year-old is expected to complete a medical later this week, clearing the final major hurdle before his move to Stamford Bridge is finalised. His deal is set to run until June 2028, giving Xabi Alonso a highly experienced option as Chelsea overhaul their midfield before the new campaign.
Henderson became a free agent after leaving Brentford by mutual consent, a decision confirmed by the west London club earlier this week. His exit, after just one season, has allowed Chelsea to move quickly to secure his signature.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that an agreement has been reached between all parties, with Chelsea acting swiftly once it became clear Henderson would be available.
Brentford spell ends after one season
Brentford announced the midfielder’s departure in a brief statement confirming that his contract had been terminated by mutual agreement.
“Jordan Henderson has left Brentford after a mutual agreement was reached to terminate his contract,” the club said.
Henderson joined Brentford on a free transfer from Ajax in July 2025 and spent the 2025/26 season with the Bees following their return to the Premier League.
Over the course of that campaign he made 34 appearances in all competitions, playing a central role as Thomas Frank’s side navigated what the club had described as a key period in their development back in the top flight.

In a message to supporters, Henderson expressed his gratitude to Brentford for the chance to relaunch his Premier League career.
“I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me, and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one. Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that.
“I hope I was able to play my part in helping the team through an important period for the club. We achieved a lot together last season, and it’s something everyone involved should be proud of.”
The former England captain went on to call Brentford “a special football club”, highlighting its ambition, leadership and culture, and reserving particular praise for the club’s fans.

Henderson’s impending arrival gives Alonso proven leadership and vast top-level experience in a relatively young Chelsea squad, as the club continue to reshape their options in the middle of the pitch ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The ex-Liverpool skipper enjoyed a decorated spell at Anfield, lifting the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Chelsea believe that pedigree can enhance their dressing-room leadership group as they prepare for the new campaign, with Henderson expected to be one of the most senior figures in Alonso’s squad once the deal is completed.
