Change Founder’s Day to Kwame Nkrumah Day – Onsy Nkrumah

Son of the first president of Ghana, Dr. Onsy Kwame Nkrumah, has suggested that the name Founder’s Day, a day set aside to celebrate the Life of the first president of Ghana be changed to “Kwame Nkrumah” Day to add value to the celebration.

He noted that the likes of Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jnr have their days officially recognized and celebrated in South Africa and the United States of America and Kwame Nkrumah should be treated as such.

He indicated that the Founder’s Day must be renamed Nkrumah’s Day to have the same value and recognition.

According to DR Onsy Nkrumah, the name “Kwame Nkrumah” is very popular all over the world and would help identify Ghana easily abroad and on the tourism map.

“In my opinion, Kwame Nkrumah has a better recognition than the name Ghana and his name will easily be identified on the tourism Map. Like Martin Luther King Jnr and Nelson Mandela. When you attach the name to and the birthday, it works to bring millions of dollars as revenue to the country.

This is because the day will attract lots of tourists and Diasporas into the country to celebrate their emancipation and freedom from oppression every year.

“It will increase revenue and boost cultural, economic, tourism potentials in Ghana while bringing some liveliness and enjoyment in the celebration.”: he stated . Founder’s Day is national public holiday observed in Ghana to mark the birthday of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the founding fathers of Ghana. It is celebrated on September 21 of every year.

In 2010, the late President Prof. John Evans Attah Mills established the Founders Day to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah was born on September 21, 1909 and his 106th birthday was celebrated this year.

The day was marked with lectures, symposiums and other programmes to highlight his achievements and vision.
