Chamber of Commerce asks SAEMA to change its name

Sekondi, Dec 18, GNA- The Sekondi-Takoradi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday proposed the change of name of Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly. Mr James Kainyiah, Chairman of the Chamber, announced the proposal at the fourth meeting of the second session of the Metropolitan Assembly in Sekondi.

He said the chamber is of the opinion that the present name does not make for easy identification of the area and its status to foreign investors.

Mr. Kainyiah said the chamber found from its interaction with foreign investors that the name Shama-Ahanta East gives the wrong picture about the economic potentials of the Metropolis.

He said this could be the reason why the Metropolis has failed to attract investors despite the huge publicity.

Mr. Kainyiah said Sekondi-Takoradi is strategically located in the sub-region as far as the Trans ECOWAS Highway is concerned and is competing with cities like Lome, Abidjan, Tema and Dakar, which are well ahead in some economic indices.

Mr. Kainyiah said Sekondi-Takoradi should be the name of the assembly because it is the main cities in the Metropolis.
