CEO. Of Korle Bu Allays Fears of Expectant Mothers and Visitors

C.E.O. Of Korle Bu Allays Fears of Expectant Mothers and Visitors The Chief Executive Officer for the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof. Nii Otu Nartey, has assured mothers of the safety of the wards at the hospital following an incident, which occurred on January 31, 2011 where a two-week old baby boy was stolen.

Speaking with Emefa Apawu, the host of the Big Bite morning show on XFM 95.1, a privately owned commercial radio station in Accra, Prof. Nartey said the incident occurred at the Out Patient department (OPD).

Prof. Nartey says, “the wards are safe because we have security that guards all the entrances to the wards. You cannot leave the hospital without the proper chit if you are on admission”.

“The Out Patient areas are public areas where we have all sorts of people. We cannot police that area because there are so many people coming in and even some of the patients may be attempting to steal”.

He however is advising patients to use the right channels when they visit hospitals rather than meeting and transacting with people on corridors.

Prof. Nartey established that the mother of the stolen baby, who was back at the hospital for a post-natal review as an Outpatient, failed to transact with hospital staff.

“The mother spoke to a nurse who was behind the desk then later she saw somebody else who was passing by who had dressed like a nurse”.

He said the complains desk at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital was meant for receiving complains from patients who are being maltreated by hospital staff.

Meanwhile, Prof. Nartey has revealed that Korle Bu Teaching hospital will by the middle of 2011 unveil its strategic plan for the next five years.

He added that new lifts are being installed, the surgical block is almost 90% completed and the hospital management is working in collaboration with the government to install boreholes throughout the hospital.
