Central region Veterans observe Remembrance Day

Cape Coast, Nov.11, GNA – The Central region branch of the Veterans Association of Ghana (VAG) on Friday observed Remembrance Day with a parade, flag raising and wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph at the forecourt of the Cape Coast castle.

One hundred and forty-five men and two officers from the 64th Infantry regiment from Burma Camp, personnel from the Police, Fire, Prison, Municipal guards and cadet corps from Saint Augustine’s and Adisadel colleges participated in the parade.

The Anglican Church brigade band, provided music at the solemn ceremony, which attracted many dignitaries including Mr Vallis Akyianu, former Central Regional Minister and Chief Fire Officer. At exactly 10.58 am, two minutes silence was observed for the fallen heroes in the first and second world wars, after which church bells tolled and the last post sounded.

Four wreaths were laid in their honour, the first was laid by the Central Regional Minister, Mr Isaac Edumadze on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, Mrs Rose Atingah Bio, Central Regional Police Commander laid one on behalf of the security services.

The Oguaahen, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, laid the third on behalf of the chiefs and people of Oguaa and Mr Daniel Quaye, Central Regional Chairman of VAG laid the fourth on behalf of the Veterans. Mr Quaye also read the “Binyon” verse in memory of the departed Veterans, after prayers were said for them and the nation. The parade led by Lieutenant Frank Agyemang, assisted by Second Lieutenant Frederick Amankwah later went on a route march through the streets of the Cape Coast municipality.
