CDD to hold debates for parliamentary candidates

Accra, Sept. 23, GNA – Between mid-October and mid-November, the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD)-Ghana will organise parliamentary candidates’ debates in 25 constituencies.

The forums will provide a common platform for all candidates in each constituency to present their programmes to the constituent.

The main objective of the forums is to create an opportunity for voters to assess their candidates’ programmes and policies and to help them to make informed choices at the polls.

The programme is also aimed at improving the policy content of the electioneering campaign.

A statement Professor E. Gyimah-Boadi, Executive Director, CDD, signed said each forum would provide an opportunity for the electorate in that constituency to interact with all of their candidates.

It is to inform the electorate of about the respective candidates’ programmes and policies in addressing key concerns in the constituency. The statement said emphasis would be placed on policies and programmes for deepening decentralization, reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS, controlling corruption, and enhancing transparency and public accountability in the constituency.

Seasoned personalities would moderate the forums which has all the ten regions represented

The constituencies are; Asokwa, Bantama, Akrofuom, Dormaa West, Asutifi South, Kintampo, Effutu, Komenda-Edna-Eguafo-Abirem and Cape Coast.

The others are New Abirem, Lower Manya, Shai-Osudoku, Ledzokuku, Ayawasao Central, Ashiaman, Tamale Central and Kumbungu. The rest are Ketu South, Biakoye, Ho west, Takoradi, Evalue Gwira, Bawku Central, Navrongo Central and Wa Central.

The statement said two orientation seminars would be organised in Accra and Kumasi for all participating candidates to raise awareness among the parliamentary candidates on issues of public policy at the local and national level.
