Tamale, Dec. 16, GNA – An international non-governmental organisation (NGO), has constructed over 30 hand dug wells in 65 Communities in the Savelugu/Nanton District to improve upon water and sanitation. The Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) also constructed 64 water harvesting facilities and more than 200 saokaways in the communities. Madam Sanatu Nantogma, Country Director of the CCFC, made these known at a press conference, organised by the NGO in Tamale on Tuesday. Mr. Mark Lukowski, the new Chief Executive Officer of the CCFC and Mr. Philip Maher, Communications Manager were at the press conference. The Country Director of the NGO said the CCFC had helped to increase enrolment in shoools in the district, especially that of the girl-child from 10 per cent to 20 percent.
Madam Nantogma said the NGO had also financially supported 64 people in the Northern Region to undertake the “untrained teachers programme”. She said under the Micro-Enterprise Project, the CCFC had supported over 3,000 people to improve upon their businesses. Mr. Lukowski said the NGO was committed to assisting to the people of the Northern Region improve their standards of living. He said CCFC was a member of the Child Fund Alliance that provides the needs of children in poor countries and was spending over 400 million US dollars in over 55 countries including Ghana, Burkina-Faso, Ethopia and Tanzania.
He said CCFC funded programmes in the region for the past 13 years and was currently supporting more than 8,000 school children. Mr. Lukowski said the NGO had contacted the Canadian government and the UN for their support to enable it to sustain its activities.
