Catholic priest calls for ban on sand winning at Apam beach

Apam (C/R), July 21, GNA – The Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Apam, Rev. Fr. Jude Eduafo Ampah, has appealed to estate developers and grave diggers to stop winning sand at the sea shore close to Catholic schools in Apam.

Rev. Fr. Ampah, the Local Manager of Catholic Schools at Apam, said the situation was becoming alarming.

“If sand winning in the area is not stopped immediately the sea, which is less than 50 metres away from the schools, will wash away the schools as well as the St. Luke’s Catholic Hospital in no time,” Rev Fr Ampah said in an interview.

The Priest appealed to the Gomoa West District Assembly to enforce the law banning sand winning at beaches.

He said the Assembly must not look on unconcerned for sand winners to make the sea to wash away public property before calling on the government to intervene by building a sea defence wall.

Miss Agnes Mensah, the Headmistress of the Catholic Junior High School, described the situation as serious and that if no immediate action was taken to stop sand winning at the beach, the school and the hospital would be washed away in less than five years.

She said people were recruited to heap sand right behind the school for trucks to convey at dawn, at weekends or during holidays when school is not in session.
