Ashaiman, March 25, GNA – The 53 most affected victims of last June’s Flood at Ashaiman, on Thursday, received various working tools and materials valued at GHC19,000 from four Catholic Churches in the Municipality.
St Augustine, St Luke, Blessed Clementina and Holy Trinity Catholic Churches, and the Most Reverend Leon B. Kalenga, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, contributed towards the purchase of the items. They include a spraying machine with accessories, bags of rice, cement, food items, cooking utensils, sewing machines with accessories, and an undisclosed amount of money. The Reverend Father John Schilitz, Parish Priest of St Augustine Catholic Church, who presented the items on behalf of the donors, stated that beneficiaries of the items were made up of both Catholics and non-Catholics.
Rev Father Schilitz also stated that even though the government and benevolent organizations distributed relief items to the flood victims, the churches realized that some were most affected, because they lost their working tools during the disaster. The items, he said, were, therefore, meant to help the victims to re-start their jobs.
The Parish Priest explained that a Committee was set up to re-assess the extent of damage and to come out with a list of those that where affected most. Numo Adinortey Addison, Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, who received the items on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked the donors for their gesture.
Numo Addison said both the Assembly and the Church existed to ensure the holistic well being and salvation of the residents. He pointed out that poverty was one enemy both the Church and the Assembly must not relent in their efforts to eliminate from the society.
