CATHOLIC BISHOP DIES

The Right Rev. Charles Kweku Sam, Catholic Bishop of Sekondi -Takoradi, died on Monday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness. Bishop Sam, 58, succeeded the late Rt. Rev. Joseph Amihere Essuah the first Bishop of the diocese. Bishop Sam was born at Awuni in Tehwasa Amenfi traditional area on February 2, 1940, to Opanyin Joseph Sam and Madam Mary Ama Agyapomah. He entered saint Teresa’s minor seminary at Amisano in 1956, from where he proceeded to saint Peter’s Major Seminary in 1961 where he had his Philosophical and Theological studies. He was ordained into the Priesthood on July 23, 1967. Bishop Sam was elected the administrator of the diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi in January 1981, and appointed Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi on December 18, 1981, followed by his Episcopal ordination in Rome by His Holiness, Pope John Paul the second, on January six, 1982. He had his official enthronement as Bishop of Sekondi-Takoradi on February 20, 1982. He was chairman of the migrants commission of the Ghana Bishops’ conference. gri
