Caterer sentenced for not undergoing medical screening

The Amasaman District Magistrate Court has sentenced a 36-year-old caterer to a fine of GHC120 or in default serve six months imprisonment in hard labour.

Solomon Ayeh, who was charged with willfully failing to undergo medical screening before selling food to the public pleaded guilty.

Mr. Raymond Salasi Agbodo, Assistant Chief Environmental Officer, told the court presided over by Mrs. Emelia Abrakwa that, the accused was a caterer and a food vendor who lives at Abenease near Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality.

He said on February 19 this year, at about 0915 hours, Environmental Health officers on their normal rounds entered the working premises of the accused and detected that he was preparing food for sale to the public without a medical certificate.

Mr. Agbodo said the accused was, therefore, asked to report at the Environmental Health Office at Amasaman, but he failed to do so.

He said a court summon was later served on him to appear before the Amasaman District Magistrate Court, but he failed to honour the summons and a bench warrant was issued to arrest him.

Before passing judgement, Mrs. Abrakwa warned food vendors and caterers who failed to undergo medical screening before selling food to the public that they will not be spared by her court.
