Castle wardens slam open defecation

Authorities at the Cape Coast Castle have called on the Oguaa Traditional Council and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to help halt open defecation close to the country’s forts.

The request, according to the Central and Western Regional Director of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, Nicholas Ivor, is to stop indigenes’ persistent desecration of the castles, which continues to dismay visitors.

Though the Cape Coast Castle has been identified as one of the World’s Heritage sites, rampant open defecation close to this monument threatens to turn off all potential callers.

The museums board director lamented the many occasions he had been confronted by tourists horrified by the mess close to the castle. Mr. Ivor’s worse irk is that some of the tourists do take pictures of those squatting to ease themselves, instead of the targeted castle.

The castles administrator, therefore, used the platform of TV Africa to plead with the Cape Coast chiefs and administrators to use their good offices to stem the tide.

In what looked like a reciprocal demand, the traditional authority led by Osabarima Kwesi Atta and Nana Kodwo Kondua used TV Africa to re-echo their demand for royalties from the two castles at Cape Coast and Elmina.

They liken the issue at the Cape Coast and Elmina castles to allowing a stranger to plug mangoes on one’s compound without benefitting from it.
