CASFORD appeals to UGCC to reconsider closedown of hall

Sunyani (B/A), Aug. 30, GNA – The Brong-Ahafo Regional Branch of the Casely Hayford Hall Alumni Association (CASFORD) of the University of Cape Coast, has appealed to the authorities of the university to reconsider their decision to close down the hall for renovations.

At a press conference in Sunyani on Monday, Mr Samuel Kyei Adomah, regional member of the interim executive, suggested that the renovation would be carried out in phases, while students affiliated to the hall could be accommodated as well.

He noted with concern the serious accommodation problem facing the students of the university, adding that, any attempt to completely close down the hall to make way for renovation would aggravate the “already bad accommodation situation on campus”.

“The land lords area is already squeezing too much from the students, so to throw out the students from the hall will put too much pressure on the students, who are already grappling with payment of academic user fees and other related expenditures”, Mr Adomah stressed. “We strongly believe that the authorities have an intention of making ‘CASFORD HALL’ a mixed one hence the decision to throw out all students so that fresh admissions could be made with both sexes being affiliated to the hall”.

He noted that all the universities in the country had single sex hall, which had united front and expressed worry about the intentions of the authorities to ensure total closure of the hall, which he said, had a unique fighting spirit and an excellent solidarity among themselves. “It is envisaged that the move will break the much nurtured CASFORD solidarity and eventually kill the association’s spirit” Mr Adomah added.

Meanwhile, the regional branch of the association had a membership of 100 people.
