Carpenter jailed 10 years for poisoning step children

Tarkwa (w/r) April 7, GNA- The Tarkwa Circuit Court, has sentenced Samuel Kwofie, a carpenter to 10 years imprisonment on his own plea, for attempting to poison his two step children.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Alex Asamoah told the court presided over by Mr Ajet Nasam that the Complainant who was the wife of the accused had three children in a previous marriage.

He said the couple were at loggerheads because Kwofie suspected the wife of engaging in extra marital affair.

The accused therefore warned the wife that he would punish her, but she did not take it serious.

Chief Inspector Asamoah said at about 1400 hours one 25 August 2004 the accused mixed D.D.T. insecticide with gari and gave it to his step children- Kojo Owusu, and Angelina Conney to eat.

The children started experiencing stomach ache and collapsed and were rushed to a clinic and later referred to Tarkwa Government Hospital where they were admitted.

Kwofie was arrested and during interrogation, he admitted the offence and stated that the wife had threatened him with divorce and out of frustration decided to poison the children.
