Cargo vessel left stranded at Volta lake

The cargo vessel that ply the Volta lake to the Buipe port in the Northern region has been left stranded ashore as a result of the shortfall in the water level of the lake.

A senior Staff at the Volta Lake disclosed to Starr News’ Eastern regional Correspondent Kojo Ansah that the malfunctioning of the Bui Dam has also aggravated the situation forcing the vessel to further delay until enough water accumulates in the lake before taking off.

He said the vessel sometimes takes as long as three weeks ashore before setting off to the Buipe port.

There are fears the situation will heavily affect the finances of the company.

The pusher tug transports fuel including kerosene, diesel and petrol from the storage facility of the Bulk Oil Storage & Transportation Company Limited (BOST) to the Northern and upper regions and also to the northern parts of the Brong Ahafo region.

The Cargo Vessel also transports food stuffs, agricultural machinery, drugs, cement, Cotton for the textile industry, among others to Buipe.

BOST contributes over 70% of the total revenue of the Volta Lake transport.
