Capt. Mahama was exploring the environment when he was killed – Chief of Defense Staff

The Chief of Defense Staff, Lt. Major General Obed Akwa has stated that Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama was on “relieving duties” in the Upper West Denkyira-Boase in the Central Region when he met his untimely death.

Captain Mahama had been at the area for about three weeks and was exploring the environment when he was killed, Major Akwa said at a press briefing on Thursday.

He added that as part of the military routine, it was necessary for Captain Mahama to visit the chiefs, assemblymen and other leaders of the area in order for him to get familiar with the people and the area where he was deployed.

“He had been in that location for about three weeks. During that period, it is part of our routine that he would have seen the opinion leaders of that place, the chiefs the assemblymen etc.’’

According to Major Obed Akwa, he had no doubt that ‘’Captain Mahama was in the process of familiarizing himself with the environment but within three weeks he couldn’t have covered all people who needed to be seen especially those beyond his immediate area where he was based’’.

Captain Mahama was lynched by an irate group of youth in Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region who reportedly mistook him for an armed robber and was later set on fire.

The unfortunate incident which happened on Monday 29th May has been roundly condemned by Ghanaians.

After the news of his death broke out, the Ghana Police and the Ghana Armed Forces trooped the area to conduct investigations into the issues surrounding the death of Captain Mahama.

According to Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, Captain Mahama of the 5th Battalion of Infantry was due for promotion to the rank of a Major. He was married with two children.

The gruesome murder has brought sorrow to many Ghanaians especially the Ghana Armed Forces.
