Some eyewitnesses to the killing of the Captain Maxwell Mahama at Demkyira Obuasi on Monday have said that the soldier identified himself as a solider and pleaded to be taken to the police station, YEN.com.gh can report.
According to one eyewitness, the army officer repeatedly said, “I am an officer. Take me to the police station”, but the irate mob ignored his remarks and proceeded to lynch him. The eyewitness accounts suggests that “I am an officer. Take me to the police station” were among the last words the Ghana Army captain uttered before his untimely demise.
The accounts also give credence to reports that Captain Mahama was set up by the assembly man and some illegal miners in the community, who deemed him a threat to their galamsey operations.
YEN.com.gh earlier quoted one eyewitness, Kojo Duku, as saying that the assembly man, William Baah, and some illegal miners at Denkyira Obuasi planned and carried out Captain Mahama’s killing because his presence in the community threatened them. D
uku said the assembly man knew exactly who Captain Mahama was and was aware that the soldier hated illegal mining.
“They planned to end his life and those behind the plan are the galamseyers and the assembly man,” he said.
