Capevars sacks typist for extorting money to assist in admission

The authorities of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Tuesday dismissed a grade two typist of the electrical section of its maintenance department for extorting 400,000 cedis from a candidate seeking admission to the University.

The typist, John Mensah, who has been employed at the university for 19 years, was said to have taken the money from the candidate, whose name was not disclosed under the pretext of helping him gain admission.

The UCC Registrar, Mr Samuel Kofi Ohene said in an interview at Cape Coast on Thursday that while he was in his office on Tuesday the candidate came to report to him that Mensah had collected the money from him with the undertaking that he would help him to gain admission but failed to do so. He also failed to refund the money.

Mr Ohene said upon that information, he set up a committee to investigate the matter and that Mensah admitted the offence before the committee.

He explained that the candidate, who had aggregate 19, could not have been accepted in the university, because only candidates with aggregate six to 18 were currently being admitted.

The Registrar referred to section 7 of the UCC’s Admissions Regulations, which states that if any candidate entered the university by false qualification or unapproved way, he/she would be dismissed when caught.

He warned other employees against such acts adding that anybody caught for a similar offence would not be spared, regardless of the number of years served.
