Canoe Fishermen laud President for keeping faith with them

Tema New Town, May 31, GNA – Nii Adjierteh Mator III, Chief Fisherman at the Tema Fishing Harbour, has lauded President Mills for promising to rehabilitate the Wood Wharf at the Canoe Beach.

Making the commendation in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tema at the weekend, Nii Mator said with the visit and inspection of the Wharf by a team of civil engineers, to assess its condition, the President had demonstrated that he had kept faith with the canoe fishermen at the Harbour.

The Chief Fisherman commended the government for supplying fishermen at the canoe beach with pre-mix fuel, but said the supply of three tankers a week, was inadequate, and therefore suggested that their weekly allocation be increased to six or seven tankers.

Mr Jerry Adjei, Secretary of the Tema Landing Beach Pre-Mix Committee, urged fishermen who indulged in lighting fishing to desist from the practice, since it adversely affected the fishing profession. Mr Adjei appealed to the fisher-folks at the beach to keep the surroundings tidy at all times, in order to prevent the outbreak of epidemics.

The rehabilitation of the Wood Wharf at the Canoe Beach is estimated to cost four million dollars. 31 May 10
