Candidates fail to meet scholarship criteria

Ekumfi Atwiaa (C/R), Oct. 22, GNA – All the candidates presented by the Ekumfi Atwiaa Junior Secondary School in the last Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) failed to meet the criteria of a scholarship scheme instituted by chiefs of the town to undergo senior secondary school education.

Four chiefs and a queen mother pooled resources last year to institute a full scholarship covering tuition, boarding and examination fees for the senior secondary school course for students who would score between aggregates six to 10.

The best student in the last examinations could only manage aggregate 24, the next obtained 27 while a third had 30. Nana Akono Mensah V, Tufuhene, who announced this at the annual “ayerye” festival of the people expressed the disappointment of the chiefs about the poor performance and urged teachers, parents and the students to help improve the situation.

Nana Baah Okuampah VII, chief of the town urged citizens living outside to visit home regularly to contribute their quota towards the development of the community.

He announced that a 10 unit palace with conference room and a library initiated by the community had reached roofing level. Certificate of honour were awarded to five citizens for their contributions toward the development of the town.

Mrs Comfort Owusu, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman East and a citizen of the town donated 100 bags of cement from her share of the MPs common fund for construction of teachers’ quarters in the town.

Nana Osam Kokonua II, Queen mother and Nana Baah Okanto, the Gyasehene both emphasised the importance of education and urged parents to invest more in their children’s education.
