Canada to support fight against desertification

Accra, Sept. 30, GNA – Canada is prepared to support the implementation of the National Action Plan on Desertification and Food Security approved by Cabinet in March 2003, Mr Edward Osei Nsenkyire, Chief Director of the Ministry of Science and Environment, told the Ghana News Agency on Thursday.

Mr Nsenkyire said the plan aimed at controlling drought and increasing food production, especially in the Northern Regions of Ghana. He was briefing the Ghana News Agency after a four-member delegation from the Canadian High Commission paid a courtesy call on the Minister, Prof. Kasim Kasanga during which Mr Archie Book was introduced as the New Director of Cooperation of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) in Ghana.

The Minister said the support for desertification programmes would help improve the economic situation in affected areas. He commended CIDA for supporting various projects in the Northern regions and pledged the Ministry’s commitment in ensuring their success.
