CAN to support live televising of NPP’s electoral challenge

The Conservative Alliance Network (CAN) says it will support live media coverage of court proceedings in which the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is seeking to challenge the presidential election results because its national interest.

The statement signed by Mr Anthony Abotsi Afriyie, Mr Patriot Faisal Ibrahim and Mr Edem Agudogo, said covering the court proceedings live in media would not only entrench transparency and full participation of the citizenry but also give Ghana the opportunity to display its democratic maturity and respect for rule of law.

The statement said “we believe the challenge to the presidential election results deserves the same coverage since it bothers on a sensitive and critical matter in our national life”.

It cited the Ghana @ 50, MV Benjamin, National Reconciliation Commission among others as some of the public interest cases, which had enjoyed live coverage in the past.

CAN applauded the NPP’s 2012 presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for resorting to courts process in resolving such “a delicate matter”.

“Indeed, matters like this have turned otherwise peaceful nations into war torn countries”, the statement added.

It congratulated Ghanaians for the peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections and called on Ghanaians to remain calm as the court proceedings progressed.
