CAL Bank shooting: Regional commander orders detention of officer

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander has ordered the detention of Inspector Bernard Frimpong, the police officer at the center of a shooting incident over the weekend inside the Derby Avenue Branch of CAL Bank.

Investigation into the case has also been transferred from the Accra district office to the Greater Accra Regional Command.

These were made known to TV3 by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Freeman Tettey, the regional police Public Relations Officer (PRO), on Monday, March 10.

He disclosed that, as part of the investigation, misconduct was realized on the part of Inspector Frimpong.

The officer, who was on guard duties last Saturday at the Bank, opened fire in the banking hall following an altercation with one Nathaniel Nortey, who is said to be a customer of the Bank.

The police officer is reported to have injured three persons in the shooting incident.

DSP Tettey says the investigation team has requested the video on the Bank’s closed-circuit television (CCTV).

“We visited the crime scene to take the necessary samples,” he told TV3’s Bridget Otoo on Midday Live.

He further stated that the Bank’s Director of Operations and some witnesses have already been invited for interrogation.

The Greater Accra Police PRO said Inspector Frimpong has been detained for allegedly causing harm to innocent people.

Inspector Frimpong’s case will also be looked into by the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Bureau, DSP Tettey said.
