Ho, Dec 1, GNA – The Ho branch of the “United Cadres Foot Soldiers” of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on government to step up security against large scale smuggling in the Volta Region and other parts of the country.
“Looking at the amount of money the state is losing through this cross border smuggling, we the Cadres feel something seriously must be done on this situation.”
The call was contained in a statement read on behalf of the Cadres by their Chairman, Warrant Officer (W.O.1) Roy Kotoka, at a news conference in Ho.
The Cadres mentioned Kadjebi, Shia and Nyive border areas as places where smuggling has become worse.
“At Aflao”, they said “one can see empty drums and other containers packed in some houses close to the Ghana-Togo border waiting for petrol and kerosene tankers arrival in the night, to fill with petrol and kerosene for evacuation to Togo.”
The Cadres therefore asked government to recruit additional hands to augment the “few security personnel” to effectively police the country’s borders against smuggling.
