Kumasi, July 14, GNA – A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced Mohammed Awal, a cable thief on his own plea to five years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing Ghana Telecommunications (GT) cables valued at 2,000 Ghana Cedis (20 million cedis).
The court presided over by Mr Justice Richard Mac Kogyapwah ordered the accused to pay for the cost of the damaged cables or in default serve four years imprisonment in hard labour. Police Chief Inspector Wilfred Salia told that the court that the accused is a scrap dealer whilst Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed, complainant is a tailor and GT customer living at Aboabo Number One in Kumasi. He said at dawn on July 8, this year, the complainant saw Awal cutting the cables with a pair of pliers from a telephone pole that served the complainant and raised the alarm that attracted some members of the neighbourhood watch committee in the area.
The prosecution said the accused was arrested and handed over to the Asawasi police together with the exhibits and after investigations charged with the offence. 14 July 07
