Cable maker Nexans expresses concern about influx of substandard wires

Tema, Oct 15, GNA – Dr Emmanuel K. Annan, General Manager of Nexans Kabelmetal Ghana Limited on Tuesday expressed concern on the influx of substandard cable wires in the Ghanaian market. He advised the public to be careful in patronising such products considering its threat on life and property due to their low copper and insulation capacity. Dr Annan was speaking to newsmen in Tema after a media tour of the company’s plant to mark Nexans Press Day. He also warned distributors and importers to desist from repackaging substandard wires as Kabelmetal products for sale, adding that such practices amounted to fraud. He asked the public to properly maintain electrical systems in their homes in order to stem fire outbreaks. Dr Annan said Nexans had repositioned itself to provide cable system solutions and services for the country’s emerging oil and gas industry and that it was developing its capacity to improve standards to meet the high quality demand of the sector. He used the occasion to announce a new product by Nexans, an anti-robbery cable system and expressed hope that it would help stem cable theft in the country.

Dr Wolfgang Bedorf, Nexans’ Executive Vice President for Middle East, Russia and Africa, said the African continent would become one of the most dynamic markets in the world. He said as a result, Nexans was working at improving its operations in the continent. Nexan’s production sites in Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria and Morocco with sales and support offices in eight other African countries, contributed 312 million Euros to Nexan’s total 7.5 billion Euros sales for last year. 15 Oct 08
