Cabbie arrested for raping passenger

The police have apprehended a 25-year-old taxi driver for allegedly raping a female passenger after robbing her of her money and mobile telephone.

Joseph Allotey allegedly committed the act when the victim hired his services from Abeka Lapaz to Darkuman, suburbs of Accra.

He allegedly robbed the victim of an amount of GHc700 together with her Samsung Galaxy Note 4 mobile phone after subjecting her to severe beatings.

The mobile phone was later recovered by the police.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Accra Regional Police Commander, said the victim, on July 23, 2015 at about 10:00 pm, picked the taxi at Lapaz to transport her home after withdrawing an amount of GHc 700 with an Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

Upon reaching Darkuman Junction where the victim wanted to alight, Allottey refused to stop and took her to a point near a school called Hill Grace Preparatory.

Allotey, the police officer said, then subjected the lady to severe beatings, making her helpless and weak, and under duress, raped her in his vehicle.

Not satisfied, Allotey pulled a knife and managed to rob her of the aforementioned money in addition to her Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone.

After the police had received the information, the suspect was later apprehended at his hideout at Nii Boi Town, another suburb of Accra.

When a search was conducted on him, police retrieved the knife and the telephone belonging to the victim.

Allotey, upon interrogations, was said to have admitted committing the offence and that he would be put before court soon.
