C/R VAT secretariat exceeds revenue target

Cape Coast. Jan. 15, GNA- The Central regional secretariat of the Value Added Tax (VAT) collected more than 10 billion cedis last year as against a target of nine billion cedis.

Mr Ben Hutchful, Deputy Regional Commissioner told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview in Cape Coast that the secretariat exceeded its target as a result of intensified education, prompting many companies and traders to readily pay their taxes, and an increase in registration of more businesses in the region.

Mr Hutchful said his outfit arrested nine traders last year for failing to issue VAT invoices and that they would soon be arraigned to serve as a deterrent.

He VAT office would continue to educate the public on the need to pay VAT or in default attract a penalty of 10 million cedis fine or five years’ imprisonment.

He mentioned lack of logistics as a major problem facing the office and appealed to the government to consider opening more branches in the region to enhance their work.
