Cape Coast, Feb. 10, GNA – The chairman of the Central Region Livestock Farmers Association (CERLFA), Mr Kofi Yankson, on Thursday announced that from March, people who trade in livestock would have to produce waybills issued by the association and permits from veterinary officers before being allowed to move the animals in or out of the region.
This, he said, was to help reduce the spate of livestock rustling, especially cattle, in the Central region, as well as other parts of the country.
Mr Yankson announced this at the association’s meeting in Cape Coast, to discuss problems facing it. He expressed concern about the high incidence of cattle rustling within Kasoa and surrounding areas, where he said, two pregnant cows were stolen and killed on January 9 this year, and the next day, cattle rustlers attacked a kraal and shot a Fulani herdsman. Mr Yankson appealed to the police to help prosecute such unscrupulous people, stressing that if nothing was done to address the situation, it would greatly affect livestock production in the region.
He urged that at police checkpoints, it should be ensured that any persons transporting livestock should be made to produce the requisite documents covering them. Touching on support for the association, Mr Yankson appealed to the government and other bodies interested livestock production, to come to the aid of the association to enable it achieve its aims and objectives.
