C-Poly demo: ‘Today’s protest just a rehearsal’

The vice chairman of the Cape Coast Polytechnic Alumni Association has pointed out that the protests by students and some staff on campus on Tuesday 1st March is a preparation for a massive demonstration in the coming days.

“If they are not ready, we will go around to make sure that government listens. This is just a rehearsal to our major demonstration. Next week, we are going to hit Cape Coast streets to demonstrate,” Nana Fobi Donkor told Joy FM.

Some individuals protested on campus for several hours over the failure of government to include the school in the list of six polytechnics to be converted into technical universities even though the institute scored high marks in performance in recent years.

Disgruntled students blocked the entrance to the home of the rector, preventing him from attending a meeting in the morning, while the school’s council chairman was also prevented from entering the school’s premises.

The students also accused authorities of the institute of not doing enough to get the school to be included in the first group of polytechnics to be raised to university status.

Mr Donkor said they wanted to “tell them (government) that we are not satisfied” with the exclusion of Cape Coast Polytechnic from the exercise.

“We believe that the school must be included because why Ho Polytechinc was added is questionable,” he added.
