Increase the number of water hydrants – Dr Agyarko-Poku

Kumasi, Dec. 10, GNA – Dr Thomas Agyarko-Poku, a Senior Medical Officer of the Suntreso Government Hospital in Kumasi, has expressed worry about inadequate water hydrants in the metropolis attributing it to the activities of unscrupulous and self-seeking elements. He noted that with the rapid development and expansion of the city, there was the need for such facilities to be extended to new settlement areas to enable the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Personnel to have access to the facilities to enhance their work. Dr Agyarko-Poku, who was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi on Tuesday, said the shortage of water hydrants had led to the destruction of property worth several millions of cedis. He reminded the staff of the GNFS to liaise with the Ghana Water Company to map up strategies to help them identify all functioning and non-functioning hydrants to assist them in the performance of their duties. The Senior Medical Officer was not happy about the way and manner personnel at times went in search of water, which was hard to come by and said the situation affected their work. Mr Agyarko-Poku appealed to Ghanaians especially developers to stop building along pathways of water hydrants and see them as national assets. He advised the staff of the GNFS to desist from drawing water from hydrants for sale adding such practice undermined their integrity and asked them to intensify their public education and the need to protect such facilities for the benefit of the nation. 10 Dec. 08
