Buruli Ulcer cases detected in three communities

Tepa (Ash) Nov. 28, GNA – Four new cases of Buruli ulcer has been detected in three communities in the Ahafo-Ano North district of Ashanti Region. The communities are Bonkron, Gambia and Nsenkesu. Briefing newsmen at Tepa, the Assembly Member for Bonkron electoral area, Mr Kyei Bawuah said the communities’ members last week detected four suspected cases and reported it to the district health directorate. He said when the cases were confirmed as Buruli Ulcer, the District Health Directorate organised a day sensitization forum at the three communities.

The victims, Mr Bawuah said, were however undergoing medical treatment. He appealed to the District Assembly to provide the three communities with good drinking water to reduce the spread of the disease in the areas as the only source of drinking water in the area is a stream.

Speaking at separate forums, the District Director of Ghana Health Services, Mrs Elizabeth Adentwi said the disease often started like a boil on the skin and later changes into a hard-to-heal sore and thus appealed to the people to report all such cases to the nearest health facility.
