Builsa District NHIS hits national registration target

Sandema (U/E), May 29, GNA – The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the Builsa District is the first in the country to hit the national target of registering 60 per cent of the population in its area of jurisdiction.

Mr. Thomas Kofi Alonsi, the District Chief Executive, said this at a People’s Assembly held in Sandema at the weekend. He said since its inauguration in April, 2004 the scheme had registered 49,272 clients and this represents 61.6 per cent of the district’s population.

Mr Alonsi said between 2005 and 2007, premium mobilized by the scheme stood at 67,249 Ghana cedis. The scheme received subsidy of 460,898 Ghana cedis from the government.

He said the district assembly had provided a lot of logistics including stationery, motorbikes, computers and printers to the scheme. He commended DANIDA for providing financial support to the scheme and expressed optimism that with their continued support three quarters of the district’s population would be covered by the end of the year. Participants at the form appealed to the government and stakeholders, especially citizens from the northern regions, to brainstorm and come out with pragmatic means to set up industries for sheanut processing. This could generate more employment for the people in the area and reduce poverty.
