Bui Dam Would Make Significant Difference

Space FM, Bui- A 28 year old citizen of Banada Ahenkro in the Tain District of the Brong-Ahafo Region, Yaw Nsiah Kyeremeh, has observed that the Bui Dam is a significant project that will make a lot of difference in the long run, improving the quality of life and providing power for industry and commerce in the area.

He noted that if previous governments had been more proactive, the nation would have been better off by now.

“I always say some of our previous governments have failed the nation in terms of development and I knowGhanaians understand me”, he said.

The Bui Dam, which is to be constructed over the Black Volta within the next five years, by Sino-Hydro of China , would generate 400MW to the existing energy capacity.

Speaking to Space FM at Bui shortly before the sod cutting ceremony by president Kufour to commence work on the 622 million dollar dam, Nsiah Kyeremeh said “for a long time, the people of the area have lived in poverty and I believe the coming of the dam would certainly bring employment to the youth to enhance standards of living”.

He urged government to pay adequate compensations to those who would be relocated and added that “government should acquire aerial photos of the planning area to document what activities are on the ground now, if there are no such photos at the moment, then educate citizens in the area not to make speculations in order to increase their compensations.

Again, Nsiah Kyeremeh asked government to involve nananom in every stage of the project to ensure transparency at all times.

Apart from hydropower generation, the project has irrigation, fisheries and tourism components and the construction of a nucleus of a metropolis to be called Bui City that is expected to provide impetus to the economic and social transformation of the area.
